Yellowknife- Northwest Territories, Canada

In January 2023, I joined a photography workshop by Offbeat Photo to learn more about night photography up in the winter wilds of the Northwest Territories. Yellowknife is known for it’s amazing auroras- when it is dark and clear you can see amazing auroras 80% of nights! Though at the time of year we were there, you need to be prepared for COLD temperatures! Typically temperatures are about -40F this time of year, but we got lucky as they had been having warmer than usual temperatures so lows were about -20 to 25F and a lot snowier than usual. The only downside was that meant more clouds. We went out three nights with the workshop, run by some amazing photographers: Paul Zizka and Kris Andres. They were extremely knowledgeable about the area, how to find the auroras, and when cloudy what else there is to photograph. With about 16 hours of nighttime, there are lots of opportunities for night photography! We even had an igloo and inukshuk to photograph! I highly recommend a trip with Offbeat Photo, I learned a ton and had a fantastic time. The group was amazing, and I hope to see everyone again down the road!
